The Frisian broadcaster, Omrop Fryslân, has started its own channel on YouTube, the international website, which is used by thousands of people all over the world to post their own short videos on-line.

Omrop Fryslân is using the channel to show a selection of its television reports such as news reports and sports items.  Also, parts of the cultural programme 'K-rûte' and the daily TV-magazine Hea!

All reports on http://www.youtube.com/omropfryslan are in the Frisian language. Omrop Fryslân will only publish short pieces on YouTube, because most programmes are already on their own website at http://www.omropfryslan.nl

“We simply want to reach as many people as possible with our content'', editor-in-chief Hans Snijder comments. “If people like what they see on YouTube they often go to our own website as well.''

Omrop Fryslân has started the channel in collaboration with the YouTube company, a part of Google, which welcomes professional broadcasters as a content partners.

YouTube has an estimated 20 million unique visitors every month. Every day some 100 million clips are being watched and 65,000 new clips are added.

The Frisian broadcasters are also adding a second and third channel on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/klipkar for Frisian videoclips and http://www.youtube.com/noardewyn for live performances of Frisian bands. (Eurolang 2007)
